Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what information HailDataHub (“HailDataHub,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects when you use haildatahub.com and our related emails, reports, alerts, and tools (the “Service”), how we use it, and the choices you have. It works alongside our Terms of Service.
1. Who we are
HailDataHub publishes hail data, live hail logs, forecasts, outlooks, and paid reports and memberships for storm chasers, repair professionals, and other people who follow hail. You can reach us at reports@haildatahub.com.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us. You can use most of the site without telling us who you are. We only collect personal information when you choose to give it to us:
- Paid membership and account. When you buy a membership or another paid product, checkout happens on Stripe. Stripe sends us your email address, the plan you bought, and Stripe reference numbers for your customer record, subscription, and checkout. We use your email address to create your HailDataHub account and send your sign-in details.
- Hail text alerts signup. Company name, phone number, email address, the city or ZIP code you want alerts for, and the type of user you are (for example insurance, paintless dent repair, or automotive).
- Free email lists. Your email address, which list you joined (daily, weekly, or yearly), the page you signed up on, and when you agreed to receive the emails.
- Contact form. Your name, email address, subject, and message.
- Hail reports. If you submit a hail report, we collect the city, state, hail size, date and time, and any notes you add. Hail reports are published on our live hail log, so do not put personal information in them.
- Labor rate submissions. State, ZIP code, insurance carrier or dealership brand, rate type, and the photo or PDF you upload. Please remove any customer personal information before you upload a document.
- Member questions. If you are a member and ask a question through your member account, we keep your question and our answer with your account.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our server receives standard technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages you request. We record the IP address used for alert signups, email list signups, and labor rate submissions, and we use IP addresses to limit spam and abuse. For hail reports, we store a scrambled (hashed) version of the IP address instead of the address itself. Cookies are covered in section 6.
3. How we use information
- To run the Service, including your account, membership, alerts, emails, and reports.
- To process purchases and manage subscriptions.
- To send the emails and texts you signed up for, and messages about your account or purchase.
- To answer your questions and contact form messages.
- To review and publish hail reports and labor rate information.
- To keep the site secure and prevent spam, fraud, and abuse.
- To show advertising (see section 7).
4. Payments (Stripe)
Payments are handled by Stripe on Stripe’s own checkout pages. Your card number and other payment details go straight to Stripe. HailDataHub does not receive or store your full card number. Stripe handles your payment information under its own privacy policy, which you can read at https://stripe.com/privacy.
5. Email and text alerts, and how to unsubscribe
We send email from reports@haildatahub.com. This includes the free daily, weekly, or yearly emails you choose to join, member emails, and reports you order. To stop receiving our emails, email us at reports@haildatahub.com from the address you signed up with and ask to be removed.
Hail text alerts are only sent if you sign up. Volume can be very high on busy storm days. Reply STOP to any text to opt out. Message and data rates may apply. Our alerts do not replace official Wireless Emergency Alerts or local emergency instructions.
6. Cookies
Cookies are small files your browser stores for a website. We use:
- Sign-in cookies. When you sign in to your account, WordPress (the software our site runs on) sets cookies that keep you signed in. If you check “Remember Me,” they last longer.
- Caching. We use a caching system to make pages load faster. It may set a cookie so signed-in visitors see the right version of a page.
- Advertising cookies. Google places cookies to show ads (see section 7).
- Stripe cookies. Stripe may set its own cookies on its checkout pages to process payments and prevent fraud.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block sign-in cookies, you will not be able to sign in to your account.
7. Advertising and cookies
HailDataHub uses Google AdSense to show advertising. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.
You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. To learn more about how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see How Google uses cookies in advertising.
8. Third-party services
Some features rely on outside services. When your browser loads content from one of them, that service receives your IP address and standard browser information, and its own privacy policy applies.
- Stripe for payments (section 4).
- Google AdSense for advertising (section 7).
- Maps and weather data. Our live maps load map tiles from Esri and, if you choose it, OpenStreetMap. They also load radar images from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet, hail outlooks from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, and forecast data from Open-Meteo. Our forecast outlook images load from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center. Our Canada, Europe, and Australia live maps also load map code from the unpkg and jsDelivr networks and weather layers from RainViewer and NASA. The Canada map adds Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the Europe map adds Germany’s national weather service (DWD).
- Location lookup. When you enter a city or ZIP code for alerts or a hail report, our server may send that place name to OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim service to find its map location. We send only the place name, not your contact details.
- Web hosting and email delivery. Our website, its backups, and the emails it sends run through our hosting and email delivery providers.
- Links to other sites. Links to social media sites (such as Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, and YouTube) and to Google Maps are plain links. Those sites do not receive information from us unless you click through, and their own policies apply once you are there.
9. How we share information
We share personal information only:
- with the service providers described above, so they can do their part of running the Service;
- when you publish it yourself, such as hail report details shown on the live hail log; and
- when required by law, or when needed to protect the rights, safety, or security of HailDataHub, our users, or others.
We do not sell or rent the email addresses, phone numbers, or other contact details you give us.
10. Your choices
- Emails: ask us to remove you at any time (section 5).
- Texts: reply STOP.
- Personalized ads: use Google Ads Settings.
- Cookies: use your browser settings.
- Your information: email reports@haildatahub.com to ask for a copy of the personal information we have about you, or to have it corrected or deleted. We may need to confirm your identity first, and we may keep some records where the law requires it or to complete a purchase you made.
- Subscriptions: cancel under the cancellation terms shown at purchase, or contact us.
11. Security
We use HTTPS, login protection, and other reasonable measures to protect the information we hold. No website or method of storing data is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. How long we keep information
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy. For example, we keep it while your account, membership, or list signup is active, or longer if we need it for records or to meet legal requirements. You can ask us to delete your information at any time (section 10).
13. Children
HailDataHub is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy by posting a new version on this page with a new effective date. If you keep using the Service after a change, the updated policy applies.
